This event features a fireside chat with Better Venture authors Erika Brodnock (Extend Ventures) and Johannes Lenhard (Venture ESG) on diversity and inclusion in the venture capital industry .
This lecture series focuses on the role of finance in the entrepreneurial journey. The aim is to improve our understanding of the role of early-stage financiers in the start-up and scale-up of new ventures. Discussions will touch upon several research topics like the types of constraints that limit the start and growth of new companies, and the role of specialized financiers, as well as policy, in mitigating them.
Erika Brodnock is an award-winning entrepreneur, philanthropist, and angel investor. She is also an MBA, a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London, and a PhD candidate in the Inclusion Initiative at the LSE. She authored Diversity Beyond Gender and co-authored the TRANSPARENT Framework and Better Venture - Improving Diversity, Innovation, and Profitability in Venture Capital and Startups.
Erika is Sky News’ resident parenting expert, co-founder at Extend Ventures, The Black Funding Network, and Kinhub, providing data-driven coaching and personalised employee support. She is one of 16 Black women in the UK that has raised more than £1m in startup funding. Erika is also a Non-Executive Director of The Good Play Guide; and serves on the APPG for Entrepreneurship advisory board.
Dr Johannes Lenhard is co-director of the non-profit VentureESG and teaches at the University of Cambridge. He is the co-author of a recent book on DEI in VC and tech, Better Venture, and the author of a forthcoming monograph on the ethics of VC investors as well as two books on homelessness.
Juanita González-Uribe is Associate Professor in Finance at the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship, private equity and innovation. Her work spans different regions including Latin America, the UK, and the USA.
