This event features a fireside chat with Ian Sosso, Founder and Managing Partner at Monte Carlo Capital, on the paths from investment banking to venture capital.

This lecture series focuses on the role of finance in the entrepreneurial journey. The aim is to improve our understanding of the role of early-stage financiers in the start-up and scale-up of new ventures. Discussions will touch upon several research topics like the types of constraints that limit the start and growth of new companies, and the role of specialized financiers, as well as policy, in mitigating them.

 

Ian Sosso founded Monte Carlo Capital in 2009 as an angel investor to invest his own capital. Monte Carlo Capital now invests in the US. Europe and the UK via funds and SPVs and looks for businesses with a clear edge, strong intellectual property or looking to disrupt an industry, and has built a portfolio of exceptional companies in sectors ranging from biotech and medical devices to artificial intelligence, robotics, fintech, robotics and consumer products. 

Ian joined the European Business Angels Network (EBAN) in 2016 and in 2017 won the best performing new member award of EBAN. Ian was elected to the board of EBAN in June 2018 and in June 2019 won the “best European early stage investor award, EBAN’s most prestigious award. EBAN is the pan-European trade association for the early-stage investor community, representing Europe’s 30,000 business angels, and gathers member organisations in 59 countries. He is also a board member of the Monaco Venture Capital Association.

Juanita González-Uribe is Associate Professor in Finance at the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship, private equity and innovation. Her work spans different regions including Latin America, the UK, and the USA.
